Radical in February: Jesus on Love

It’s the Love Month.   The one sponsored by florists, candy makers and Hallmark.  Red and pink, hearts and roses—everywhere.   Old movies—Love Story and innumerable chick flicks---will fill the airways.

Engagements will happen.  (I thought I would get engaged on Valentine’s, but surprise, it was March 14 instead.)  Undying love will be expressed.

True love.  Will it last?  Maybe, maybe not.

But there is one whose love is perfect, undying, unconditional and everlasting.  He never breaks His promises.  He never quits loving you and me.

And He has a lot to say to us about love—TRUE LOVE--for God and  for others.  Here are a few words from Jesus on love:

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. Anyone who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching.

Love your neighbor as yourself. If you love only those who love you, why should you get credit for that?  Even sinners love those who love them!

But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,

Love your enemies and do good to those who hate you.

By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.

Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.

The writer in me wants to wrap these words up with some pithy and profound comments.  But I think Jesus says it pretty well—and the love He describes is truly radical.

How about you?  Got real love?
