From My Favorite Prophet: Peace Like a River

“So how was your week, Judy? I was praying for you,” said my friend.

“Well, nothing went as I had planned.  And sometimes I didn’t do so well.  I got frustrated, and annoyed, and fearful…”

And so I spent some time with my favorite prophet, letting his words from God soak into my heart and soul and spirit.  And once again, as so many time before, God eased my frustration and calmed my annoyance and soothed my fear.

So if you are have one of those days or weeks or years, maybe God will speak to you through words from the prophet Isaiah: This is what the Lord says—    your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel:

“I am the Lord your God,    who teaches you what is good for you    and leads you along the paths you should follow.Oh, that you had listened to my commands!    Then you would have had peace flowing like a gentle river    and righteousness rolling over you like waves in the sea. (Isaiah 48:17-18)

I have swept away your sins like a cloud.    I have scattered your offenses like the morning mist.Oh, return to me,    for I have paid the price to set you free.” (Isaiah 44:22)

But now, O Jacob, listen to the Lord who created you.    O Israel, the one who formed you says,“Do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you.    I have called you by name; you are mine. (Isaiah 43:1)

I have called you back from the ends of the earth,    saying, ‘You are my servant.’

For I have chosen you    and will not throw you away.

Don’t be afraid, for I am with you.    Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God.

I will strengthen you and help you.    I will hold you up with my victorious right hand. (Isaiah 41:9-10)

“But forget all that—    it is nothing compared to what I am going to do.

For I am about to do something new.    See, I have already begun! Do you not see it?

I will make a pathway through the wilderness.    I will create rivers in the dry wasteland. (Isaiah 43:18-19)

“Never! Can a mother forget her nursing child?    Can she feel no love for the child she has borne?

But even if that were possible,    I would not forget you!

See, I have written your name on the palms of my hands. (Isaiah 49:15-16)

“Is anyone thirsty?    Come and drink—    even if you have no money!

Come, take your choice of wine or milk—    it’s all free!

Why spend your money on food that does not give you strength?    Why pay for food that does you no good?

Listen to me, and you will eat what is good.    You will enjoy the finest food.

“Come to me with your ears wide open.    Listen, and you will find life.(Isaiah 55:1-3)

What about you?  What words of peace do you hear?
