When the Grass Starts Looking Greener Somewhere Else...
One of my favorite things about Florida is that it is green year round.Sure, sometimes things dry out a little during dry season (our delightful winters). And the occasional January freeze, if it gets below 30 F and lasts several hours, can turn all those green St. Augustine lawns brown. But it didn’t touch ours last week. Around the neighborhood: mostly brown. Ours: mostly green. My hard-working husband loves working on our lawn--mowing, trimming, weeding, feeding. We have a service to take care of the bugs and other Florida challenges. We water the once a week we are allowed. And people stop to ask how we always have such a beautiful lawn—so green!A little food. A little water.Which brings me to a great Twitter post by my Dutch friend Wouter Van Der Toorn: Some simple radical advice: When the grass starts looking greener somewhere else, start watering your own yard!True for the yard. And even more true for my spiritual life. When I’m feeling a little dried out, or worn out. ... When my friend’s life seems richer, fuller, more colorful….then perhaps I need to start tending to my own life.A little food. A little water….I imagine my spirit will green right up.What about you? Is your life green, or do you need a little food, a little water?c2012 Judy Douglass
