Prodigal Prayer Day 2026: Transformation—Mercy
We are just two weeks from our June 2 Prodigal Prayer Day. We will be joining together—thousands of us—around the world and around the clock, to lift the loved ones whose names have been shared with us. We know our God is listening, rejoicing, and responding.
We also know the enemy is pursuing creative ways to interfere. He will do all he can to prevent us from praying, to shake our faith and increase our fear.
This is why we take these weeks before June 2 to prepare us for the battle in the heavenlies. (https://judydouglass.com/blog/war-in-the-heavenlies-and-some-surprising-warriors)
We are considering five words that, as we understand and apply them, we are transformed, and as we pray for prodigals, they can be transformed. We have looked at thank, love, and grace. This week we focus on God’s amazing mercy, and His willingness to forgive. Yes, there are consequences for our sins. But He loves mercy. He shows mercy to us, shows mercy to our prodigals, and asks us to show mercy to them as well.
I’m just going to list for us a few examples and promises of mercy from our God. You will be blessed.
The Mercy of God
Jesus, from the Sermon on the Mount:
Matthew 5:7: “Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.
Exodus 24:6 : The Lord passed in front of Moses, calling out, “Yahweh! The Lord! The God of compassion and mercy! I am slow to anger and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness.
Deuteronomy 31:13 “I’m in a desperate situation!” David replied to Gad. “But let me fall into the hands of the Lord, for his mercy is very great. Do not let me fall into human hands.”
Lamentations 3:22-23 22 The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; 23 they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.
Psalm 28:6: Praise the Lord! For he has heard my cry for mercy.
Hosea 6:6: “I desire mercy.”
Micah 6:8: No, O people, the Lord has told you what is good, and this is what he requires of you: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.
Genesis 45:4-5: Then Joseph said to his brothers, “Come closer to me.” And they came closer. He said, “I am your brother, Joseph, whom you sold into Egypt. 5 And now do not be distressed, or angry with yourselves, because you sold me here; for God sent me before you to preserve life.
Matthew 5:7: God blesses those who are merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
Matthew 9:13
Then he added, “Now go and learn the meaning of this Scripture: ‘I want you to show mercy, not offer sacrifices.’ For I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.”
Matthew:18:21-22: Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?” Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.
Luke 1:77-79: to give his people the knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins, because of the tender mercy of our God, by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven to shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the path of peace.
Hebrews 4:16: Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
James 2:13: Mercy triumphs over judgment.
And finally:
Luke 23:24; Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.”
These are just a few of the times and ways our Lord has chosen mercy. May we be blessed and encouraged as we recognize His mercy for us…and may it help us look for ways we can do the same for our loved ones.
Here are additional encouragements for you:
