The Very Best Love Song

I was sure Steve would propose to me on Valentine’s Day. I dressed for it. Lovely dinner at our favorite restaurant. Waited patiently. Nothing. I was disappointed. After all, we had been dating five years. It seemed it was time. He did ask me a month later, while driving to Disneyland.

When our Debbie and Nick got engaged 18 years ago, I greatly appreciated Nick’s special surprise. I got to be in on it.

I remember well when Nick made an unannounced trip from Montana to Orlando, guitar and freshly composed love song in hand. Debbie and I were at a women’s retreat. He drove my car there, and I sneaked him in to the meeting room. The look on her face was priceless.

Then on the beach, at sunset, Nick sang his love song to Debbie and asked her to marry him. Obviously, she said yes.

So how romantic is that? Her very own love song.

Your very own love song

You have one, you know! Your very own love song. Composed and written by God himself:

The LORD your God in your midst, the Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love , He will rejoice over you with singing. (Zephaniah 3:17)

God’s love song to each of us has many verses, some written to all of us, but most composed just for you, or just for me. In fact, He is always adding new stanzas of His love for us.

Some verses are for all of us:

Verse 1: I made you. I made you to be with me, to enjoy each other; and to show what I’m like to the world, to reflect my goodness and glory to all around.

Verse 2:  I missed you.  ou went away, your own way. I hated the separation, I wept over you, I knew I had to do something to bring you back.

Verse 3: I redeemed you.  I sent my son to die in your place, to forgive your sins, to pay the ransom to win you back.

Verse 4: I adopted you. I invited you into my family and made you my own dear child. I will never leave you or abandon you.

Verse 5: I have plans for you. Good plans for a future and hope. Good works already prepared for you. For you to be and do all I designed you for.

 Verses just for you

Then come the special verses of his love for you, for me:  Those specific plans. The opportunities. The challenges. The trials. The joys and disappointments.

Certainly this past year has given me many opportunities to hold on to those verses, those truths of his love and faithfulness. Of course, there is the never leave my house verse. I seem to have one about not getting to see my grandchildren. But there’s also a verse of unexpected opportunities to touch lives for Jesus.

Some lines of your love song fill your heart with hope, while others may seem painful or fearful. Remember that every verse is part of His love song. Throughout God’s song for you, you can hear him whispering:

I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore with lovingkindness I have drawn you. (Jeremiah 31:3)

How priceless is your unfailing love, O God! (Psalm36:7)

My unfailing love for you will not be shaken (Isaiah 54:10)

…neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:37-38)

Beautiful music, for sure. The melody, the harmony, the beat all flow together to flood our hearts with peace and joy and love!

What is a recent verse in God’s love song for you?
